The Shanzu Orphans Home (SOH) in Kenya:
The "Shanzu Orphans Home (SOH)" and the charity association were founded by the German Christa Wolff.
Since the foundation of SOH in 2005 we were able to support
50 orphans and children in need.
Mama Christa Foundation (MCF) in Kenia:
In honor of Mrs. Wolff we have named the new organization "Mama Christa Foundation (MCF)". The main goal and purpose of the association is the financial support of the children, youth and young adults of the former SOH.
After a long development phase, she finally opened the SOH together with the Kenyan manager John Ounga in 2005.
Since then, the children's home has given 40 children, adolescents and young adults between the ages of 1 and 21 a home and individual support.
Thanks to many international visitors and volunteers, the children were able to get to know many people from different cultures. In this way, the children were able to develop open and tolerant communication as well as intercultural competence. On the other hand, it was always important that the Kenyan traditions were lived and promoted.
Christa Wolff has built up a strong network in both Kenya and Germany. Among other things, this resulted in the long-standing and very intensive partnership with the Rosa Luxemburg Gymnasium, which has supported us regularly since 2003.
In 2013, for reasons of age, she handed over the home to the Catholic sisters 'Sisters of St. Joseph'.
It has always been her vision that the children will be supported in the long term until they can take care of themselves.
Unfortunately, this wish could not be fulfilled in the SOH, since most children and young people had to leave the home in 2017/2018 due to Kenyan law. The reason for this is that children are only allowed to live in children's homes like the SOH for a maximum of three years.
The association terminated the cooperation with the Sisters of St. Joseph in 2018, one of the main reasons being different perspectives and values.
Due to the separation, the Mama Christa Foundation was founded in February 2019.
Ms. Wolff is a valued honorary member of the MCF eV association and is still very interested in how the project is developing.
The MCF carries on Christa Wolff's wish and supports former SOH youths after their stay in the home.
MCF has set up residential groups for young people, which are looked after by the Kenyan team Norah Baraza and Linda Atieno. If young people are able to return to their families of origin, they will continue to be accompanied there by counseling and therapy offers. They also receive financial support for food, health care and school fees as well as further education at colleges or universities. Another supported form of housing for the children and young people is accommodation in a boarding school.
